This summer the first Vortex Splashpad® opened in Georgetown Township, Jenison, MI.
It's located near Maplewood Lake, the Splashpad® and has given children in the area a new way to cool off as for the last few years, the lake has been closed to swimming due to water quality concerns.
"I love it," said Laurie Turecky, of Georgetown Township, who was visiting the park with her daughter, Amber, 5. "It's awesome."
Georgetown Township received a state grant to update the park and also contributed its own funds to complete the project. In addition to the Splashpad®, a playground and tennis courts were also added to keep kids and residents active.
Splashpads have become popular additions to parks around Western Michigan. Several communities have been forced to close their community swimming pools due to low attendance and high costs of maintenance and staffing. Based on 2011 attendance, the cost of operating three Grand Rapids pools for seven weeks during the summer cost $24.44 per swimmer per day which is significantly more than what the community would charge residents to use the facility.
“(Pools) are expensive. They will never bring in enough revenue to sustain them,” Second Ward City Commissioner Rosalynn Bliss said. “Our community is a different place than when our pools were built and there are other swimming options such as at the YMCA or Kroc Center” he added.
Without the need for lifeguards, Splashpads have proven to be a safe, inclusive and durable aquatic activity for children in the area. Maintenance costs are much lower than swimming pools and Splashpads have the added benefit of longer operational hours and a longer season. Most pools are only open for 7-8 weeks whereas Splashpads can remain open for the entire summer.
Splashpads are also a solution to aging wading pools, many of which lie in disrepair and can be inefficient with water use. Wading pools can be converted or refurbished with Vortex Solutions to increase play value for children.
