Five new container gardens will be featured at the 2022 Chelsea Flower Show featuring products from Welsh Slate, Breedon Special Aggregates and other Welsh Slate products.
Hard landscaping products such as decorative aggregates made from Welsh Slate or Breedon Special Aggregates, will be used in conjunction with the 2022 Chelsea Flower Show and the return of the container gardens created last year.
Welsh Slate, Breedon Special Aggregates and Breedon Group will be featured on five new container gardens. They were designed by budding landscape designers who are being mentored by Paul Hervey Brookes, an award-winning landscape designer. He has also used a variety of products in the Brewin Dolphin Garden that he created for this year's event.
Brewin Dolphin's garden for this year was created to show how an old 1900s industrial brownfield site can still be transformed using sustainability principles at its core. It reflects the challenges that many British homeowners will face when inheriting poor soil conditions.
Reclaimed slate will also be used in Welsh Slate Paving. However, recycled aggregates and bricks from sustainably sourced sources will also be used. The pool will be surrounded in Welsh Slate and will help to reduce flooding risk from high-volume rainfall events, which are becoming more common due to climate change.
Paul uses a variety of Welsh Slate’s Penrhyn Heath landscaping products including fencing, glacial rocks, slate edging and paving slabs with natural edges.
Breedon Special Aggregates' Breedon Golden Amber Gravel, the only self-binding gravel that holds a Royal warrant, has been used to create a natural, hard-wearing walkway from the balcony to the container gardens.
The container gardens are paved with Welsh Slate riven pavers. These include the "Mandala meditation and mindfulness garden" by Nicki Hollier, and the "Enchanted Rain garden" by Bea Tann. The first is inspired by the conditions of the pandemic and offers a safe place to sit and meditate, while listening to tranquil water. It's a peaceful, restful, but revitalizing place. This second design is inspired by a rainy yard in Manchester and was designed to thrive under wet conditions. It is also influenced by UK forests.
Jane Porter designed "The still garden", which features Highland Blend chips. It was inspired by Scotland and the Highlands and Islands. They use native species and the climate to create an immersive, quiet and tranquil atmosphere.
Breedon Special Aggregates' 10mm Breedon Buff natural chipspings will be used in the "Wild Kitchen Garden" by Ann Treneman, and "A Mediterranean Reflection" garden by Tanya K Wilson, and Johanna Norlin.
The "Wild Kitchen Garden" is a collection of wild edible plants and trees that can be planted in small urban settings. It features informal, colourful, natural, and delicious planting. It can be used in the backyard of a city terrace. "A Mediterranean reflection" draws inspiration from the Mallorcan landscape and uses the colors and textures of the Mediterranean through artisanal elements.
