Climate crisis requires urgent action. Sustainability is essential for the protection of the planet's environment, improving our quality of life, protecting the ecosystem, and conserving natural resources for future generations. There is no time to waste. The average global temperature increase in 2021 will be 1.2 degrees Celsius, compared to the 19th century. The Paris Agreement Goal calls for a rise of at least 2 degrees Celsius, and preferably less than +1.5 degrees Celsius. However, the current policy standards are allowing this rise to be pushed to 2.7 degrees Celsius by 2100.

Although it is widely believed that COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021 failed to meet the emission reduction pledges required to reach the Paris Agreement pledge, the full commitment to the pledges could still keep the limit within reach. The US-China Agreement to cooperate to improve climate action and India's commitment to zero carbon emissions by 2070 are signs that governments are increasing their efforts. The pledge of more than 450 banks and insurers to reduce carbon emissions by $130 trillion by 2050 via Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero by more than 450 firms is a significant milestone in corporate action towards climate mitigation.

Companies across industries are adapting their practices to comply with new regulations. This is a problem that the amusement park industry continues to face. Scope 3 emissions are particularly vulnerable because their main reference point in terms of baseline analysis, calculation standards and commitments is the Science Based Targets initiative. Scope 3 emissions are all indirect emissions that occur within a company’s value chain. They often make up the largest portion of a company’s footprints.

This means that a waterpark can't be enough. A sustainable waterpark must be part of a larger vision of a Net Zero future. It is essential to establish principles that can validate and claim credibility in projects in order to make this vision a reality.

Polin Waterparks has also been developing KPIs (key performance indicator) to help determine the waterpark's carbon footprint. These indicators will allow the amusement industry pinpoint their emissions and to focus more on strategies, commitments and action planning for net-zero.

How will Polin Waterparks attain Net-Zero status then? The first step is to create a new corporate strategy, both internal and external. This will establish the foundation of our overall philosophy. The roadmap to Net-Zero Polin Waterparks will follow. It will include the following steps: Reengineering Polin Waterparks' activities and processes to counter Scope 1 and 2, greening our supply chain to reduce Scope 3 emissions, and developing a range new sustainable products under our Bright line.
