A.K. Waugh Ltd.

A.K. Waugh Limited was founded by Mr. Archibald K. Waugh (pictured above) in 1940 to capitalise on his experience with Fuel Oil heating, gained with another famous but now defunct Glasgow company, Duncan Low Ltd*. At the beginning of the Second World War he approached the Petroleum Board, comprising Shell, BP and Esso to supply small oil heaters for the War effort. Successful in obtaining an Order for several units, this was the start of the business which continues to this day.

During the 1950's and 1960's A.K. Waugh Ltd. held a range of important patents, some of which will be published on this website in future.

Archie Waugh was the second person to be admitted to Honorary Membership of BCEMA (British Combustion Equipment Manfacturers Association), in 1977. (BCEMA changed its name in 2004 to ICOM)

Following Archie, his son Billy and later Bruce joined the company, taking it through the boom years of the 1950's and 1960's. Bruce left the company in the early 1970's to successfully pursue other interests away from the engineering world. His recent passing and contribution to the company is marked here.

The present Managing Director Mr. Andrew Waugh took over on the death of his father Billy Waugh in 1988 and is the third generation of the family to run the business.

We are proud of the fact that many of our heaters are still in use after over 40 years, as evidenced by spares enquiries for heaters made in the 1940's and 50's. Typically these heaters have never required spare parts nor servicing, a testament to the quality and skill with which they were manufactured. Unlike many companies for whom records appear to be a waste of space, we have an effective records system and are able to provide background information for virtually every heater made to date.

We celebrate our 70th year in business in 2010, a fair achievement for any company.

Finally, we work to ISO9001:2000 and have done so for some years.
