A warm welcome to Ruskins Trees and Landscapes. We have been supplying, planting and moving large trees, shrubs and hedges since 1986. Our aim is to provide a service that is second to none - we strive not merely to meet expectations but always to exceed them.

Ruskins Trees and Landscapes also provide Air Spade services to facilitate service trenches through root plates of protected trees, root investigation and decompaction.  Our Play Trees and Play Logs are used in natural play schemes across the country.  Specialist teams are used by clients to eradicate Japanese Knotweed and other invasive plants. Our grounds maintenance teams assist clients with the management and enhancement of their external landscape.

Crown Topiary is the largest specialist topiary nursery in the UK

We're a family run business that has been built on quality, service and attention to detail. We take pride in supplying topiary, both large and small, that has been hand cut, tended and trimmed to achieve the best possible, long lasting results... oh, and we have been trading since 1982, so we know a thing or two about shaped trees and shrubs! 

Our two acre nursery has lots of topiary specimens ready for delivery anywhere in the UK or Ireland. This extensive portfolio of stock and wide choice of plant varieties enables the creation of ‘instant gardens’, with the use of pre-prepared instant topiary hedging, cloud formed hedging, topiary box head, screening pleached trees or stunning topiary arches and parasol trees in various sizes... but if you want that special individual piece, we stock a range of good quality traditional topiary plants for you to choose from.

More traditional topiary forms such as cones & pyramids, balls, half-standards, cubes and spirals, make great features in a garden, along a driveway or path and look amazing in pots or planters. For that something different and modern, we also stock a range of beautiful cloud forms in a variety of species and the more artistic and unique animal, bird and life form shapes.

Horticultural Influence

Alastair Beddall started his landscape contracting business in 1981, naming the company Practicality Brown, in favour of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, the famous 18th Century landscape designer. Capability Brown designed some of Britain’s most spectacular park landscapes at historic homes such as Blenheim, Burghley House and Hampton Court. His designs can still be seen today, nearly three centuries later.

Company Development

During the 1980s, Practicality Brown (incorporated in 1987) worked on long term contracts for the Forestry Commission and was one of the first companies to develop tree clearance without burning. Pioneering whole tree chipping in the UK on a commercial scale in 1985, Practicality Brown have extensive experience of mechanised vegetation clearance, introducing Ahwi Mulchers in 1999 and mechanised Tree Shears in 2002.

By 1989 the company was also supplying semi mature trees and forest products to the landscape trade. In the late 1990s, Practicality Brown where instrumental in developing the Elveden Instant Hedge™ with the Elveden Estate in East Anglia. Together, they identified a need for a substantial, mature hedge up to 6ft high and planted species to grow for at least a four years before being sold in an ongoing programme.
