Technical Hydraulic Handbook

Edition 11 of the Technical Hydraulic Handbook is now available and provides engineers with a valuable reference for the wide range of Lee fluid control components. The new handbook contains detailed engineering data and specifications for plugs, restrictors, flow controls, nozzles, check valves, relief valves, shuttle valves, solenoid valves, filter screens and includes many new products. Among the new products featured are the 3 way, high flow solenoid valve, the 250 series solenoid valve, zero leak check valves, high pressure bender jets, Hi-Bar inlet screens and etched safety screens. Accompanying the handbook is a CD which contains a fully indexed PDF file of the hard copy book with a link to The Lee Company website.

High Pressure Plug For Venting Applications

Now available from miniature component specialists LEE PRODUCTS LTD is a new version of its AFO (Axial Force Only) plug which incorporates an O ring for additional sealing in special Oil Tool applications. The plug is designed to vent air from a product when filling it with hydraulic oil or to release trapped high pressure gas from an activated down-hole pyrotechnic tool when brought to the surface. Secondary retention of the plug in the manifold is provided by a circlip which prevents the plug from being removed completely from the manifold, thus safely protecting the operator during the gas venting process.

AFO plugs are designed to be both removable and reusable and are ideal for high pressure / high temperature manifold applications. The plugs feature a floating seal that self-aligns to allow for threaded holes that are not concentric with the through hole. As a result of the plug’s two-piece construction, the seal does not rotate during installation, thus preventing galling of the seat. Also, since all the force is contained in the axial direction, the boss diameter can be smaller compared to other designs of plug. Standard AFO plugs are manufactured from corrosion resistant 303 and 15-5 stainless steel and are designed to withstand pressures up to 60,000 psig and temperatures to 600°F. NACE compliant models are also available made from MP35N.

Rugged Safety Screens

A range of high pressure flange mount etched safety screens with burst / collapse pressures which are on average more than double that of the existing stainless steel 304L type safety screens, have been introduced by miniature component specialists
LEE PRODUCTS.

Thanks to their rugged construction, using 17-7PH CRES material, these screens provide burst / collapse pressures (depending on the hole size) from 1250 / 100 psid for the 656 flange mount option, up to 7000 / 4550 psid for the 130 flange mount option. In addition to taking advantage of higher strength material properties, the screens are designed to excel in an open area by utilizing a pleated screen bend feature which maximises their open area, or dirt holding capacity.

The screens, which are available in 28 standard versions, offer outstanding application flexibility and are completely interchangeable with LEE’s existing etched, flange mount safety screens. They can be supplied in 7 different flange sizes ranging from 0.130” to 0.656” in diameter. In addition, standard screen hole sizes include 0.004”, 0.006”, 0.008” and 0.015”, nominal weights are from 0.05 to 3.1 grams.

Miniature Relief Valve Ensures Zero Leakage

A new miniature relief valve which is ideally suited for thermal relief and low flow hydraulic pressure relief applications where zero leakage is essential, is the latest addition to the established range of LEE PRODUCTS miniature components.

The Lee 281 zero leak relief valve is designed for applications such as aircraft cowl door mechanisms where it will prevent leakage of oil onto a runway when operating at normal system pressure, but will activate overboard in an emergency, at higher pressures. The cracking pressure of these valves is preset at the factory with capabilities ranging from 1300 psid up to 4700 psid and ensures zero leakage in a one minute test; one drop per hour maximum.

The valve provides typical flow rates ranging from a few ml per minute for thermal relief applications and up to 250 ml/min for low flow pressure relief applications. These valves, which weigh-in at only 6 grams, are 100% tested and inspected and are designed for operating temperatures of between -65ºF to +275ºF.

Miniature Shuttle Valve

A miniature, cartridge style shuttle valve which is designed to install easily into a drilled hole and eliminates the need for threads, o-rings or in-house designs, is the latest addition to the LEE PRODUCTS range of miniature components.   The Lee IMH shuttle valve is an economical and reliable alternative solution to the problem of achieving hydraulic isolation in manifolds and has numerous potential applications.

This new valve features a compact, non-dentented, selective design that is just 5.5mm in diameter, 12.2mm long and weighs less than 1.4 grams. They are constructed entirely from stainless steel and are 100% performance tested for flow and leakage to ensure consistent, long-term performance at maximum working pressures up to 28 MPa (4,060 psi).

Installation is achieved simply by inserting the shuttle valve into a drilled hole, then driving the

expansion pin into the valve body to seal and lock the valve in-place.

Lee IMH shuttle valves are ideally suited as a signal device for auxiliary functions, such as hydraulically released, spring applied brakes and load sensing, or wherever effective hydraulic isolation is required across a wide range of industrial and automotive applications.

Compact Side Exit Check Valves Ensure Low Leakage

A new side exit check valve which measures just 8mm in diameter and provides the lowest pressure loss of any comparable valve, is the latest addition to the LEE PRODUCT range of miniature components. Developed by The Lee Company’s Industrial Micro Hydraulics Group (IMH), the 832 valve is the most compact of it’s type and can be easily integrated into high volume, automated assembly lines to provide a cost-effective alternative to in-house check, or relief valves.

These valves are designed to ensure low leakage and are available in both forward and reverse flow and can be supplied in three cracking pressures as standard. Rated at 32 Lohms, the 832 valve will flow more than 22.7 lit/min at pressures up to 6.9 bar. However, they can also be supplied at special cracking pressures up to a maximum of 250 kPa (2.5 bar).

Like all IMH Check valves, the 832 series are compact, threadless, cartridge style inserts which are ideal for insertion into manifolds and they benefit from the proven Lee Check, metal-to-metal seating design, which ensures optimum reliability. The robust design of these valves, combined with stainless steel construction and 100% performance testing ensures consistent, long-life performance across all general industrial hydraulic applications.

Industrial Microhydraulic Cartridge Screens

In most critical fluid control components such as those found in high volume and automotive applications, filter systems play a crucial role in protecting against rogue contamination. However effective the main ‘in-line’ filters are in these components, there is always the possibility that small particles or contaminants can pass through the main filters and so increase the potential for damage, for example, in ABS braking systems.

With these risks in mind LEE PRODUCTS offers it’s range of Industrial Microhydraulic cartridge screens which provide a low-cost, yet effective ‘last-chance’ filtration barrier. The latest additions to the range are new high pressure cartridge screens, which are rated for a minimum burst pressure of 35 MPa (5,000 psi).

These screens are constructed of stainless steel woven wire mesh and bonded together using a proprietary process that ensures superior integrity and long-life. All IMH high pressure screens use multiple screen layers and support disks to provide additional strength and integrity for applications where higher pressures could cause a single layer screen to rupture due to the effects of clogging, possibly with catastrophic consequences. For this reason Lee high pressure screens incorporate a unique, multi-layer which ensures a gradual reduction in flow performance, as opposed to a rupture which could result in a concentration of dirt flushing downstream, possibly disabling sensitive downstream components.

IMH Cartridge Style Screens, which are designed to slip into a drilled hole and be retained by a secondary means. The available diameters of 5.5, 8, 10 and 12mm have been selected so that other IMH components can be used to retain the screen.     Cont…
