29 November 2007 29/11/2007 - Irish Industry Is Awaiting Action By Justice Minister.
Ireland's Minister for Justice, Brian Lenihan, has stated that the report from the Casino Regulation Committee will be presented to the Cabinet in the near future.
The Cabinet is likely to ask a Dáil (Parliamentary) Select Committee to consider the report before deciding what type of regulations to introduce. In addition to dealing with casinos, it is also possible that the new regulations could deal with AWP style gaming machines.
Both these items were part of the unfinished business of his predecessor former Justice Minister, Michael McDowell. How Brian Lenihan deals with these issues will seriously impact on the future development of the gaming and casino sectors.
Responsible trade associations, who have made sensible representations to previous Justice Ministers, are now asking Brian Lenihan to introduce legislation that will bring the laws in Ireland in line with those in most other EU member states.
While it is understood that the growing number of casinos operating as private members clubs is one of the Minister's main concerns, regulation is also currently being sought in relation to AWPs in gaming arcades and FOBTs in betting shops.

“Astra’s core values have always been focused on invention and innovation,” stated Astra Games Managing Director Neil Chinn, “the environment we have been able to create in our new facilities will nurture and grow this innovation, and not just within Astra’s R & D team; each individual department seeks to progress and improve its performance through new ideas and more effective systems. The concept of “adding value” throughout the company will be greatly assisted by Astra’s new Production Offices and Facilities, leading to stronger products, better service and long term success for Astra and its partners and customers.”
Astra Games origins lie firmly in South Wales, created and staffed by people who had been pivotal in the development of the Gaming Industry in the area.
From the outset Astra had a keen focus on research and development, and, in order to thrive in an industry that was being driven by technological advances, brought and fostered skilled employment in many different fields that were integral in moving the company forward. Neil Chinn commented:
“South Wales is thriving with talented people with gaming industry experience and indeed emerging talent from other sectors, in terms of in-house staff and those employed by Astra’s suppliers and partners. This fact alone made it logical to remain based in South Wales and benefit from the skills pool.”
This ethos of development from within the South Wales region continued with the creation of the new production facilities. “The building itself was conceived and constructed by companies located in South Wales, creating many jobs and making a significant contribution to the local economy,” said Neil Chinn.
Astra’s success also results in success for our supply partners, many of whom reside in the South Wales region, companies such as Universal Screen Printers, Sanken, Cabinet Developments and many more. The growth of the company will also reflect in the local economy, where the creation of employment, including many skilled roles, is a result of Astra’s success. Neil Chinn adds:
“Astra House is the building block to a successful future, for Astra and our partners”
