06 November 2008 Kontron KISS 1U PCI-760: Ultra-slim 1U industrial servers now with Intel quad-core processors
The Kontron Industrial Silent Server (KISS) family has a new, high-performance member that brings the density and processing power of data processing centers to industrial applications: the Kontron KISS 1U PCI-760 with Intel quad-core processors is one of the most compact, robust, quietest and fastest high-availability industrial servers for densely packed long-lifecycle applications.
The new Kontron KISS 1U PCI-760 industrial server packs scalable performance up to the Intel Core2 Quad processor Q9300 with 4 x 2.5 GHz as well as 8 Gigabytes of DDR2 dual-channel RAM into an industrial server with an installation height of just 44 mm. This makes the Kontron KISS 1U PCI-760 the perfect fit for densely packed real-time embedded multi-processing applications; such as industrial test and measurement with simultaneous data collection and evaluation; control and visualization of imaging technologies in medical and industrial applications; as well as for the broad field of simulation technology and applications that require parallel processing of several video and/or audio streams. Security applications suitable for the Kontron KISS 1U PCI-760 also require reliable, space-saving server cluster solutions for video surveillance with automatic image recognition/face recognition in facilities management, public areas and subway/railway stations as well as mission-critical solutions, such as railroad control centers.
In addition to outstanding performance, the Kontron KISS 1U PCI-760 industrial server comes with built-in Intel Active Management Technology (Intel AMT) 3.0 remote management engine that offers enhanced security and remote management for easier maintenance, higher system availability and, therefore, reduced total costs of ownership. Remotely carrying out tasks such as installing a new OS, or setting BIOS parameters without the need for additional remote management hardware, or an on-site presence is of particular benefit for applications with densely populated server racks where the individual servers are difficult to reach. When using the Kontron KISS 1U PCI-760 companies with centralized administration and maintenance teams can also take advantage of Intel’s Active Management Technology.
The Kontron KISS 1U PCI-760 industrial server offers a wide range of interfaces for flexible customization. For applications that need the dedicated processing power of high-end 3D GPUs, there is an optional PEG interface. The Kontron KISS 1U PCI-760 also offers an optional 1 x PCI Express x 4 slot, as well as 2 x PCI 32 Bit slots, 6 x USB 2.0, 2 x Gbit Ethernet, 1x VGA and 2 serial ports. In addition to its shock and vibration protected internal 3.5” HDD, the Kontron KISS-1U server has enough space to accommodate another 3.5“ HDD or 2 x 2.5“ HDDs, also shock and vibration protected. The optional KISS Stor Slim RAID 1 sub-system provides enhanced data safety via 2 x 2.5” HDDs in a single, hot swappable carrier. State-of-the-art system security is provided by Intel Trusted Execution Technology and an on-board trusted platform module – TPM 1.2 – for software and data protection. The Kontron KISS 1U PCI-760 PSU with a controlled fan has optional 24 V DC and 48 V DC for direct connection to industrial power grids.
With a MTBF of 50,000 hours (approx. 5.7 years of continuous operation) the extremely robust and shock resistant Kontron KISS 1U PCI-760 industrial server systems ensure high availability and minimum maintenance and operate reliably in temperatures up to 45 degrees Celsius. Moreover, the temperature-controlled and ultra quiet fans are hot swappable for easier servicing. The Kontron KISS systems come with either a desktop housing or a housing for mounting in a 19 inch cabinet. OEM custom designs are also available upon request. The front panel, which is lockable, offers IP2x protection and optional IP5x. Designed for continuous operation, the KISS systems are CE certified and UL suitable.
The high-availability Kontron KISS 1U PCI-760 server supports Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 200x Server and Vista and is available as a preconfigured standard system or can be customized as needed and delivered as a tested and independently certified solution.
The EMEA and APAC manufactured KISS 1U PCI-760 systems are available now. North America manufactured KISS 1U PCI-760 systems are expected to be available in Q1 09.

03 November 2008 Social Enterprise Status For MachineGuard
MachineGuard-UK, the crime-reduction partnership, has become a Social Enterprise in recognition of its social and environmental contribution to the gaming and leisure communities. The change in status to social enterprise is a natural progression for the crime-reduction partnership which was founded in 2001 and whose primary objective is to tackle crime in the industry using a co-coordinated shared partnership approach built on communication between businesses. Social Enterprises are businesses that have social or environmental objectives; they are interested in overcoming social injustice or exclusion and contributing to society. Recent crime trends have highlighted the importance of a central crime database for the gaming industry and the need for closer working relationships between the gaming industry, MachineGuard, the Gambling Commission and police forces.
Gary Pettengell, MachineGuard MD said of the decision to register as a not for profit social enterprise “In doing this our aim is that it will strengthen the relationships we have with statutory organisations. The MachineGuard ethos has always fit perfectly with the aims and objectives of social enterprise but now with our increasing involvement with organisations such as the Gambling Commission and the police we feel the time is right to go a step further to show our credentials. As a not for profit social enterprise MachineGuard aims to encourage and enable stronger working relationships with other non commercial companies who will be more able to work with and support MachineGuard under our new regime.” There are more than 55,000 social enterprises in the UK which represents about 5% of all businesses with employees. Social enterprises contribute to society in many ways; they tackle social and environmental problems, set new standards and raise the bar for corporate responsibility. It is what a business does with its profits that determines whether it is a social enterprise, rather than its specific legal structure.
MachineGuard will remain listed with Companies house as a Limited Company with an “objects” clause that sets out the following aims or purposes for the company: 'As a not for profit social enterprise MachineGuard-UK aims to create an online community and provide the tools, information and motivation to empower organisations and businesses to reduce crime and disorder, reassure staff and the public, prevent and exclude offenders and tackle anti-social behaviour.’ Pettengell concluded “This is a positive step for MachineGuard as it will ultimately lead to better communication and an improved service to our membership and the gaming and leisure industry as a whole.”
